In a pre-TIFF lunge, Sony Pictures Classics has acquired all U.S. rights to the Robert Redford-directed thriller “The Company You Keep,” which will first screen at the Venice film festival before its Toronto showing. As usual, SPC will have a strong presence at Toronto this year, with “Amour,” “No,” “West of Memphis,” “Smashed,” “Love Is All You Need” and “Rust and Bone” all screening in the program.

In “Company,” Redford also stars with a large, high-profile cast — Shia LeBeouf, Julie Christie, Sam Elliott, Brendan Gleeson, Terence Howard, Richard Jenkins, Anna Kendrick, Brit Marling, Stanley Tucci, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Susan Sarandon — in the story of a former Weather Underground activist who gets flushed out after decades of hiding by a young journalist. Lem Dobbs adapted the novel by Neil Gordon.

Redford produced along with Bill Holderman and Nicolas Chartier, whose Voltage Pictures financed the project and is handling international sales.

“Robert Redford's film is classic storytelling at its best, and we are really looking forward to bringing the film to the American audience,” said Sony Pictures Classics co-presidents Tom Bernard and Michael Barker.

CAA negotiated the deal for the filmmakers.

SPC most recently released “To Rome With Love,” “Darling Companion” and “Celeste & Jesse Forever.”
